China’s first two domestically built large cruise ships, the Adora Magic City and Adora Flora City, met in the East China Sea on the evening of May 16, marking a historic milestone for the country’s shipbuilding industry and cruise sector.
The Magic City was returning from voyage to Busan, South Korea, when it crossed paths with its sister ship, the Adora Flora City, which had just embarked on its maiden set of sea trials from Shanghai earlier that day.
The meeting at sea has been celebrated in Chinese state media as a warm and historic event, symbolizing the nation’s confident stride into a new phase of maritime prowess, in which it aims not only to participate but also to become a primary provider in the global cruise industry.
The Magic City entered service in early 2024 and has since carried over one million passengers, proving the viability of the domestic design and operational model.
The Flora City, now in its final testing phase, represents the next step: an iterative improvement with reported enhancements in smart technology, passenger amenities and construction efficiency, which has improved by approximately 20 percent compared to the Magic City.
The Flora City is scheduled for delivery on November 6, 2026, and will begin its inaugural season from the Nansha International Cruise Home Port in Guangzhou. Its entry into service will herald increased capacity and itinerary offerings for the fast-growing Asia-Pacific cruise market.
