Europe’s airports have welcomed AccelerateEU, the European Commission’s response plan to the energy crisis triggered by the conflict in the Middle East, according to a statement from ACI Europe.
The plan outlines measures aimed at safeguarding the continued availability of jet fuel across the European airport network.
“No airport in Europe is currently facing jet fuel shortages, and flight operations are proceeding normally,” said Olivier Jankovec, director general at ACI Europe.
“But the plan adopted today is the adequate strategy and response to mitigate potential jet fuel shortage risks, given how uncertain the situation remains over the resumption of the safe and stable passage through the Strait of Hormuz.”
Key measures are the establishment of an EU Fuel Observatory to map the supply and available stocks of jet fuel, the immediate coordination with member states and fuel suppliers on alternative jet fuel sources and clarification of existing flexibilities under EU legislation regarding anti-tankering.
Also included is the use of imported fuels, and assessment of the need to review EU rules on strategic stocks to include jet fuel requirements.
The measures largely reflect key requests ACI Europe made in an April 9 letter to the EU Energy and Transport Commissioners, according to the association.
Jankovec added that in addition to the Commission’s plan, member states need to urgently suspend aviation taxes to cushion price impacts.
