Lionel Catherin has been promoted to Executive Chef at The World, Residences at Sea.

Effective July 2026, he will succeed Senior Executive Chef Geoffrey Murray, who will retire on May 9, 2026, the cruise line said in a press release.

In his new role, Catherin will partner with Executive Chef Sebastian Gnida to lead The World’s culinary program, overseeing all galley operations across the ship’s six restaurants.

He will also lead In-Residence Dining and manage a team of over 50 culinary professionals.

“It is an incredible honor to step into the role of Executive Chef aboard The World, a place that has been my professional home for over two decades,” said Catherin.

“I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me and proud to work alongside such a talented culinary team. I look forward to continuing to innovate, celebrate global flavors, and create unforgettable dining experiences for our Residents & Guests.”

Catherin joined the ship in August 2004 as Chef de Partie, becoming Sous Chef in 2008, Chef de Cuisine in 2009 and Executive Sous Chef in 2014. He also served as Relief Executive Chef between 2018 and 2024.

Catherin began his formal culinary training at 16 in a Relais & Châteaux restaurant, honing his skills in French Polynesia and France under chefs such as Charles Barrier and Jacques Maximin.

During his tenure aboard The World, he collaborated with Michelin-starred chefs and mastered culinary disciplines ranging from traditional comfort cuisine to molecular gastronomy.
