Construction of the new PhilaPort Cruise Terminal is facing significant delays, according to a report from 6 ABC Action News.

According to the report, the new facility will not be ready for the company’s inaugural cruise, which is scheduled for April 16, 2026.

The Norwegian Jewel is set to leave from the port then, marking the return of cruising to Philadelphia after a 15-year hiatus.

Norwegian Cruise Line will then operate regular sailings from Philadelphia on a year-round basis, offering itineraries to Bermuda, the Caribbean and Canada and New England.

In a statement to ABC News, PhilaPort said that there will be no delay for cruise passengers and the ship will sail from Philadelphia as scheduled.

The port authority added that construction of the new facility was delayed due to “extreme winter weather conditions.”

PhilaPort said that the embarkation process for the initial sailings will operate from a temporary facility.

“We are excited to bring cruising back to Philadelphia for the first time in many years, opening up cruising in this destination and to the broader Mid-Atlantic region,” Norwegian said in a statement to ABC News.

“Given the absence of cruising in the market for quite some time, we are working closely with our partners at PhilaPort to prepare the facility to welcome our guests,” the company continued.

“The terminal project is progressing; however, the permanent facility is taking longer than anticipated due to adverse weather conditions in the Philadelphia area this winter.”

Norwegian confirmed that the initial sailings will depart from a temporary facility, which will be “supported by operational plans designed to ensure a smooth guest experience.”

Plans are currently being finalized and will be communicated to impacted guests when available, the company continued.

“The safety and security of our guests remain our top priority, and once onboard, our crew will deliver the exceptional vacation experience our guests expect from us,” Norwegian added.

After its initial sailing, the Norwegian Jewel is scheduled to offer a series of seven- to nine-night cruises to Bermuda and Canada departing from Philadelphia.

Cruise Industry News, the ship will sail to destinations including Royal Naval Dockyard through mid-October 2026.

Norwegian Cruise Line will later return to the PhilaPort Cruise Terminal in mid-December with the Norwegian Pearl for a winter season.
