R Yacht Co. has selected the team for the maiden season for the Sefu, which is set to enter service in 2027.
Born in Osaka, Katsuya Matsui will serve as Sefu’s first captain, bringing three decades of experience to the company.
According to R Yacht Co., Matsui first joined the cruise industry in 1994, starting as third officer before serving as master of the Pacific Venus between 2011 and 2023.
The company highlighted his experience in Japan, noting that Matsui has also visited over 80 countries during his career.
“I feel a great pride as a sailor to be involved in the creation of the new ship Sefu from its construction phase as its inaugural captain, set against the backdrop of Japan’s coastline,” he said.
“Drawing on my years of experience in operating cruise ships, I will deliver the unique charm and discoveries of this voyage to everyone. I will command from the bridge to ensure that our guests experience moments of genuine emotion during Sefu’s voyages,” Matsui added.
With experience in land-based hotel operations, Ryosuke Gunji, who was born in Tokyo, will serve as the ship’s first hotel director.
R Yacht Co. said that Gunji joined the hospitality industry in 1991, working with brands like Tokyo ANA Hotel and the Agnes Hotel Tokyo.
He was also involved in planning and developing projects for the Japan Tourism Agency’s Adventure Tourism initiative.
“At Sefu, while overseeing services in guest rooms, restaurants, and the spa, I want to gently accompany each person’s experience. Not too close, not too far. I aim to provide a comfortable presence just half a step ahead, delivering a relaxed time,” Gunji said.
“Together with the entire crew, we will share this sentiment as we welcome everyone,” he continued.
The company also selected Osamu Abe, who was born in Miyagi, as the chief engineer for Sefu’s first season.
According to R Yacht Co., Abe has extensive experience in the industry, having worked with brands such as Peace Boat and Venus Cruise since 1985.
“The engine room supports the ship from unseen places. I take pride in the weight of that responsibility and will continue to ensure safe and secure voyages,” he said.
“A wonderful cruise ship is not solely made up of excellent facilities and equipment. Each crew member takes pride in their work, and by respecting and supporting each other, a natural harmony is created on board,” Abe added.
Currently under construction in Portugal’s West Sea shipyard, the Sefu is scheduled to enter service in Japan ahead of the summer of 2027.
