Holland America Line has hosted a crocheting workshop aboard the Volendam sailing on its annual 133-day Grand World Voyage.

According to a press release, this is done for Project Linus, a nonprofit organization named after a character from the Peanuts comic strip always carrying a security blanket.

The project is dedicated to providing handmade blankets to children facing illness, trauma or crisis.

Having celebrated its 30th anniversary in December 2025, the project recently announced that it has delivered more than 10 million blankets to children in need.

Holland America Line’s world cruises have been participating in the tradition for more than 20 years.

Experienced knitters work alongside beginners to create hundreds of handmade blankets ready for donation once the ship returns to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at the end of the journey.

Guests Marty and Gail Gottlieb from Jacksonville, Florida, have led the Grand World Voyage efforts for the past seven world cruises.

They boarded Volendam on Jan. 4, 2026, with nearly one million yards of yarn in more than 30 colors ready to become blankets over the four-month cruise.

As stated, a combined 1,600 blankets have been produced over the past three Grand World Voyages.

Holland America said the tradition is so popular that crew members also participate when they have time.

The completed blankets will be shipped to Project Linus once the Grand World Voyage concludes in May 2026.
