Ten cruise ships will gather in Ilha da Madeira for Funchal’s traditional New Year’s Eve firework display.
The vessels are expected to bring over 20,000 guests to welcome 2026 at the Portuguese island, in addition to nearly 10,000 crew members.
The lineup includes mostly ships serving the German and British markets, including three vessels from TUI Cruises: the Mein Schiff Relax, the Mein Schiff 3 and the Mein Schiff 7.
As the largest ship in town for the celebration, Mein Schiff Relax is also the newest vessel in the company’s fleet, having entered service earlier this year.
Funchal is also welcoming the AIDAbella and Phoenix Reisen’s Artania, as well as Fred. Olsen’s Bolette and P&O’s Arcadia.
Other visitors include the Saga Cruises fleet, which includes the Spirit of Discovery and the Spirit of Adventure.
Marella Cruises will also be present with the Marella Voyager.
Visiting Funchal for the first time, the Silver Muse is scheduled to join the celebration. Fresh from a drydock in Italy, the ship visits Madeira as part of a cruise to the Canary Islands and Portugal.
While some of the vessels will remain docked during the firework display, others are set to anchor off the island for a better view.
Some ships are also scheduled to remain docked through January 1, 2026, allowing guests to disembark and tour Funchal.
A similar gathering of cruise ships will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with seven ships set to welcome 2026 anchored off Copacabana Beach.
Rio’s lineup includes vessels from MSC, Costa, and Plantours, such as the MSC Seaview, the Costa Favolosa and the Hamburg.
The ships will bring nearly 18,000 passengers, as well as 7,000 crew members, to the Brazilian firework display.
