The Norwegian Getaway became the first cruise ship to dock at a new pier at Norwegian Cruise Line’s Great Stirrup Cay.
Currently undergoing a major enhancement project, the private island destination previously relied on tendering operations.
Guests onboard the 2014-built vessel were informed of the milestone via the ship’s Freestyle Daily journal.
“Today marks a historic moment for the Norwegian Getaway and in the history of Norwegian Cruise Line as the vessel becomes the first to dock at Great Stirrup Cay with the opening of our brand-new pier,” the company stated in its activity schedule.
“Each and every one of our guests on this cruise will be making history alongside us in this significant moment by being the first cruise passengers to walk off a ship onto the island of Great Stirrup Cay,” the text continued.
The company added that all ships visiting the destination, including those from Norwegian, Oceania and Regent, will benefit from the multi-berth pier in the future.
“As a company, we have made a transformational investment in Great Stirrup Cay to provide an enhanced experience; this includes guests no longer being required to tender from ship to shore,” Norwegian continued.
Sailing roundtrip from PortMiami, the Norwegian Getaway visited Great Stirrup Cay as part of a three-night cruise to the Bahamas.
The private island was the only port of call in the itinerary, which also included a day at sea before returning to Florida.
The new pier is part of a major upgrade project for Great Stirrup Cay that also includes the introduction of a large swimming pool and a nearly six-acre water park.
Set to open in 2026, the Great Tides park will feature 19 waterslides, a nearly 800-foot dynamic river and a wide array of water features.
