As it gets ready to enter service for Tianjin Oriental International Cruise Line, the former Costa Magica arrived in China earlier this month.
Acquired by the Chinese cruise line in November, the 2004-built ship is set to undergo a refit ahead of welcoming its first guests in the Far East.
According to sources in Asia, the vessel is expected to enter service for Tianjin Oriental International in mid-February.
Sailing under the temporary name of Ideal, the former Magica departed from the port of Astakos on November 19, 2025.
After crossing the Suez Canal and sailing through Southeast Asia, the 103,000-ton vessel arrived at the Qingdao Beihai Heavy Industry Shipyard on December 24, 2025.
The Ideal is now projected to remain at the facility for five to six weeks before embarking on its maiden voyage. Work will include a conversion to its new brand as well as technical maintenance.
Originally built for Costa Cruises in Italy, the vessel will also be renamed Vision before launching service for the Chinese brand. Additional deployment details will be revealed at a later date.
Out of service since early 2020, the former Costa Magica spent the last five years laid up in Europe.
Initially laid up due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the vessel was sold off by Carnival Corporation in early 2023.
Acquired by Seajets, the ship was renamed Mykonos Magic and sailed to Greece but remained out of service.
The Greek ferry operator planned to use the ship for a new operation in the Greek Islands and Turkey under the Neonyx Cruises banner, which aimed to offer short cruises focused on nightlife.
While initial plans called for a maiden season in the summer of 2024, the project was postponed to 2025 and later abandoned.
