Royal Caribbean International’s Ovation of the Seas offered a cruise to nowhere over the weekend due to a typhoon.

Sailing from Singapore, the 2016-built ship was originally set to offer a three-night cruise to Penang in Malaysia.

Guests were informed of the change on the first day of the sailing, which departed from the Marine Bay Cruise Centre on Nov. 27, 2025.

“Along with our meteorologist, Peyton Collado, we’ve been monitoring the development of Tropical Cyclone Sanyar along our path to Malaysia,” Royal Caribbean said in a statement.

“In order to safely avoid the storm, we’ll have to skip our visit to Penang and enjoy a day at sea instead,” the company continued.

“We’re terribly sorry for the last-minute change caused by weather – your safety is our top priority,” the statement added.

Instead of visiting Malaysia, the Ovation of the Seas spent Friday and Saturday at sea before returning to Singapore on schedule on Sunday, November 30, 2025.

In its statement, Royal Caribbean said that any pre-paid shore excursions booked through the company would be refunded as onboard credit.

While guests were able to use the credit for all onboard services and purchases, any remaining refundable amounts would be refunded to guests’ credit cards within 14 business days.

After spending the summer on the West Coast, the Ovation of the Seas arrived in Southeast Asia for a winter season in late October.

Sailing from Singapore, the 4,204-guest ship is now offering short cruises to destinations in Malaysia and Thailand.

The series of three- and four-night itineraries features visits to destinations that include Phuket and Penang.

In December, the vessel is also scheduled to offer a special eight-night cruise that celebrates New Year’s Eve in Indonesia. The itinerary is highlighted by visits to Bali, Lombok and Celukan Bawang.
