Emma McEwing, the great-granddaughter of Arctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson, christened Aurora Expeditions’ new ship on November 27, in Sydney Harbor in Australia.

The purpose-built ship, which shares a name with her great-grandfather, is currently on its inaugural voyage, a 10-night circumnavigation of Hobart, Tasmania.

“To christen this remarkable ship in my great-grandfather’s name is an immense honor. The Douglas Mawson carries forward his legacy of courage, science, and wonder, exploring the world with the same respect for nature and curiosity that defined his life,” said McEwin.

For Aurora Expeditions, the naming at Sydney Harbor marked a defining chapter for the Australian-owned company, per a press release. The company has led small ship exploration over the last 35 years, and it will continue to do so with the addition of the Douglas Mawson to its fleet.

Greg Mortimer, the founder of Aurora Expeditions, attended the ceremony. Mortimer watched on as the bow of the ship was covered in symbolic shards of ice representing the company’s rich polar history.

“Replacing champagne with ice was a deliberate and powerful choice. It reflects who we are – explorers of the polar regions, advocates for our planet, and proud custodians of Australia’s legacy of adventure. The Douglas Mawson embodies everything Aurora stands for – pioneering spirit, respect for the natural world, and a drive to explore responsibly,” said Mortimer.
