The Spirit of Adventure has recently completed five years of service for Saga Cruises after being delivered on Sep. 29, 2020.

As the second newbuild ever ordered by the UK-based company, the vessel was constructed at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany.

The 999-guest ship was initially scheduled to enter service for Saga in August 2020, but plans had to be postponed due to construction delays and the Covid-19 pandemic.

As a result, the Spirit of Adventure spent nearly one year in layup before welcoming its first guests on July 26, 2021.

A few days earlier, the 55,900-ton ship was christened at a special ceremony at the British port of Portsmouth.

Commodore Inga J. Kennedy, senior Royal Navy officer and former head of the Royal Navy Medical Service and non-executive director of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, served as the vessel’s godmother.

For its maiden cruise, the Spirit of Adventure offered a voyage to the British Isles that featured visits to Newcastle, Belfast, Liverpool, Holyhead, Bristol, Isles of Scilly and Falmouth.

The 15-night itinerary was also highlighted by scenic cruising off the Isle of Man, a British Crown Dependency in the Irish Sea.

In 2025, the Spirit of Adventure is set to continue to offer a series of itineraries departing from Portsmouth.

The 14- to 30-night voyages visit destinations in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands and the Caribbean.

Similar itineraries will be offered in 2026, in addition to summer cruises to Northern Europe that sail to Scandinavia, the British Isles and more.

Before completing its fifth year of service, the Spirit of Adventure underwent its first drydock update in late 2024.

The refit took place at a shipyard in Falmouth, England, and included updates to the vessel’s Wi-Fi system, as well as a full hull repaint and mechanical upgrades.

Cabins, dining venues and entertainment spaces were also updated with fresh lighting, new carpets and more.
