2025 has been a year of resilience and continued growth for the port of Penang.

Despite Asia deployment being impacted by the situation in the Red Sea region, the port is experiencing a positive and stable season.

“A key highlight was the maiden call of Cunard’s Queen Anne,” said Khairul Anuar bin Ahmad, head of cruise and ferry operations.

“We are thrilled to welcome our new daily cruise ship, the Berlin Oceanis, which has been operating since July, and the Piano Land, which will homeport in Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal starting at the end of November,” Ahmad told Cruise Industry News in an interview.

“We are confident in our trajectory, focusing on attracting more cruise lines and itineraries.”

The port’s focus is on a mix of strategic business developments and key infrastructure enhancements.

In 2025, Penang is expecting at least nine maiden calls, with more lined up for 2026. Ahmad said that in terms of infrastructure, the recent expansion of the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal is a significant highlight.

“We can now accommodate two Oasis-class ships simultaneously and handle up to 12,000 passengers at any given time,” Ahmad explained.

Next up for 2026 are upgraded fenders and bollards at the port’s main berth.

“Our primary focus is on transitioning from a transit port to a strategic homeport,” said Ahmad. “We believe this is the key to long-term sustainable growth.”
